Title for a fantasy book, what do you think is best?

March 17, 2009 at 8:25 pm (Now Writing, Writing, Writing Questions) (, , )

I just started writing a my first fantasy novel and I have a couple ideas for a title which I would like your opinion on, which sounds best;

Threshold

 or

Dweller on the Threshold

Threshold is the name of the world in which most of the story takes place, Dweller being the needed antagonist of the story.

I am almost in the middle of outlining the story but for a change of pace I figure it is safe to write the introduction to the book, here is what I have so far;

“Threshold is a world of unsurpassed beauty, where our physical laws breakdown. It is a world ruled by a delicate balance between good and evil, a world with many wonders and mysteries waiting to be discovered, a world where dream and reality wed and become entangled, change one and you will inevitably change the other.

Life in Theshold continued as usual, with each race doing their job like they have been for hundreds of years, while unknown to most races, the Dweller on the Threshold had a master plan that would change the landscape of the land for eons.”

This as far as I got being a bit lazy today, well actually I have done lots of refining into the outline of the book, and you know how it is, time spent preparing is never time wasted at least I hope not.

Please let me know what you guys think.

Adrian

Currently writing 3 books

March 16, 2009 at 7:57 am (Current Book Project Fiction, Writing Questions) (, , , , , )

I am writing a nonfiction book called The Way North about half way done here well besides the three revisions and rewrites that will have to go thru.

Another book I working on is called North Horizons, this is a fiction thriller, I am just starting this one I have like 3 pages done :)

And my latest addition to my work load is a fiction fantasy book called, Dweller on the Threshold, this would be my very first fantasy book and so far the most challenging. However I believe that I am better prepared to write this book than the others for one this one is fun since it exercises my imagination a lot more than the other two books and also I am actually preparing to write this book doing lots of research on mythology and I have already defined the Main character, basic plot, how it will end, I have drawn a map of the continent which the store takes place, I’ve named names and places, created different regions and their races with their uniqueness and weaknesses.  So I feel better prepared to write this book the problem now is that I am trying to create the outline but I can’t stop myself from adding too much details in the outline, may neurons just keeps on firing like it is a machine gun and I am afraid that if I don’t write it down I won’t remember later.

Anyone got any tips on how to solve this problem?

Well here I go back to researching, currently taking a break from outlining in a attempt to slow down my mind a bit.

Regards, Light and Peace to all.

Why is it that Twitter gets all the views.

March 16, 2009 at 7:44 am (Twitter) (, , )

One of my first posts in this blog was about becoming a twitterholic and that post rocked by my beginner blogger standards, however since then I made other posts not twitter related and I got only a few views.
I am amazed about all the hype about twitter, seems like everyone wants to know how to be better at twittering, including yours truly. Although I cant complain since I have gotten over 1K followers with less than 2 1/2 weeks of twittering.
Maybe I’ll get a few more views since this post is not about twitter but I mention twitter a lot, hum did I do that on purpose?

I found out today that I can actually see the shuttle launch from my backyard.

March 15, 2009 at 8:20 pm (General, NASA Shuttle Launches) (, , , , )

Today Discovery launched since I live about 1 hour and 1/2 way from Cape Canaveral I decided to try to find the shuttle taking off  outside my house. I had not realized is that our backyard is like a VIP seating to watch the shuttle launch. I am posted the video on youtube about this great discovery and I only been living here for the last 6 years.

Unfortunally I took too long to find the camera, however next launch I’ll be outside waiting for it to happen with a tripod and all.

One is only required to be alive to learn new things everyday.

Lots of light, love and peace.

Question to writers and editors, Natural Language or Second Language?

February 26, 2009 at 9:47 am (Writing Questions) (, , , , )

Hello, everyone I have a question for all of you writers and editors out there, I am brazilian and grew up in Brazil speaking Portuguese until I was 19 years old, however since then I came to US and have been living here, speaking, reading/writing English since the age of 19, now I am 35 so it’s been 16 years with English.

I think and dream in English, however it is still my 2nd language and I feel sometimes that my vocabulary is not as broad as Portuguese for example, I can be more creative with the choice of words in Portuguese, but then again I have been away from Portuguese especially writing for 16 years, so what language should I use to write my books in?

I just feel that either way it will be though, but say Portuguese is the choice then would an editor excuse some more common mistakes because I have been away from the language for so long? Or if it’s even the opposite would English editor take into account that English is my 2nd language and help out, or would it make things harder. I just feel that either way there are con’s I just don’t know what to do.

I am thinking writing a book both in English and in Portuguese however they would not be translations each would be it’s own version of the same story since this is for a non fiction book.

Or should I just write in Portuguese and have it translated into English? Maybe even the other way around it?

Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated it.

PS: I just wrote this as I think, I haven’t gone back to revise it, I want to give the reader an idea how I normally write without the hours I put into revising and editing the errors I make, however I fell that this will help gauge expertise or lack thereof in the English language.

Thanks for any help.

Get 25 Gigabyte of Free Online Storage with Microsoft

February 26, 2009 at 7:44 am (Best Online Services Ever) (, , , , , , )

Often while watching twitter updates I see people asking about a good, secure way of transfer and store data online, of course there are well know services such as facebook, Flickr, Google Picasa however none of these well know services can house my full photo collection in full resolution, currently I have about 24.8Gb of photos that I collected during my travels (one of the perks of being a consultant).

I wasn’t until recently that I found the perfect service to house my pictures online and better yet it’s completely free and by a well know company Microsoft, in fact I am surprise that more people don’t know about it, since to me it is better than all the other photo sites.

You must be eagler to know what service that is I’ll let you know it is called SkyDrive and you already probably have a username and password to access this service if you have a MSN account you automatically get access to SkyDrive visit them at: http://skydrive.live.com to login or to get your free account.

SkyDrive offers a whopping 25 Gigabytes of free storage, that is alot of free storage in my opinion and if you need more you can always have more than one account for example one personal account and one professional that would make for 50 GB of free storage.

The best part of SkyDrive is that it is not just for photos, you can upload any type of file you like, I use mainly for book storage, photos and some music. It will also let you share your shots with friends and family and is especially easy if they have a MSN account as well.

Please take a moment to leave a comment below with your thoughts and if you have any questions I can be found here on this blog and or twitter: @adrianvolts feel free to follow me and/or ask me questions.

NTFS Read and Write in MAC OSX Finally

February 24, 2009 at 10:27 pm (Best Apps and Utilities) (, , , , , , )

I finally found a great solution to a very old problem, the problem of exchanging information and data between a PC and MAC’s.
You see I have 3 Mac’s and 4 PC’s, however all my Movies, Pictures, Books and Music are stored in 2 different places at anyone time so that I always have a backup after all it is too time consuming to burn to DVD 300GB+ of data so here is what I do.

On my PC I have a Raid Mirror setup called Datastore, in there are the permanent storage of our family mementos which I share with all my other PC’s, up until recently I couldn’t share that store with Mac because of NTFS read-only restriction, however I found this great tool called MACFUSE and NTFS-3G plugin, the tool Macfuse was actually develop by someone that works at google to solve this very problem and I must say I installed yesterday and it works flawlessly and it is completely free as well.

If you need a way to read and write NTFS in your mac to keep your data in sync, head over to http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/downloads/list to get the App and then to http://www.ntfs-3g.org/ for the required free component, install them in order and per instructions reboot and voila NTFS read/write in all your macs which can make your workflow, well actually flow.

When do you know you are an TwitterAddict

February 21, 2009 at 10:29 pm (Twitter) (, , , , , )

How to find out if you are a twitter addict, if you do or know any of the following below you are an addict and tweetvention may not help you at this point.

  • You purchase your wife an iphone so she can keep in touch and know what you are up to.
  • You use any of the following 3 or more times a day; tweet; twit; twitter or any word having a twtr in any order.
  • You wake up in the morning and before going to the bathroom, having breakfast, kissing wife/kids you say good morning to your tweeps
  • if you have more than 1000 followers or are following more than 500.
  • If you like myself dream with bit.ly, tinyurl, ping.fm, tinypic and tinychat, in fact if you know what all of those things are, you are past the point of no return.
  • If you can’t help but wonder what is twitters business plan and business model

So you must be asking yourself what do I do now if I cant be saved, I’ll let you know.

If fact you have very few options here they are;

  1. Consider calling Kevin Mitchnick and asking for tips on how to become a hacker.
  2. Run naked in the street asking for mental help and maybe will get locked away in a facility with no internet connection, however watch for wifi and 3G networks they are creeping up everywhere, like the Verizon dude says “we have 3G there.”.
  3. Call your representative and complain about the health dangers of twitter.
  4. Call twitter and ask them for the psychologist numbers they consulted with when creating the service, maybe they will have the cure but they most likely will not give it to you.
  5. Call the pentagon and see if they have the cure, again they may not help you unless a twitter zombie infestation is imminent and likely to occur.
  6. Other than that just hope that you brain will be fun of useful and useless information and you will eventually leave your room again, but remember start slow, sunlight can actually hurt your eyes once you been away from it for so long.

Hopefully this post help you in some way.

Book I started today called “North Horizons”

February 21, 2009 at 3:54 am (Current Book Project Fiction) (, , )

Here is what I have so far, please let me know what you think.

North Horizon

Alice walks alone during the frigid winter night, since numbness started to set in her toes Alice realized the importance of the advice given by the old homeless woman a couple blocks back. Time had not mistreated Alice yet, with a body showing perfect curves and healthy posture only served to make matters worst for a woman in her position, the situation is even more grave than the stepfather she is trying to escape, after all at home Alice would only be abused three times a week and live peacefully the rest of the time, out here in the streets Alice was feeling the dangers of being lonely and pretty inching ever closer. She can sense the danger, she can feel it as if nature is trying to warn her of an impending doom. At three in the morning, it seems that only the worst members of society inhabit the streets, danger at this hour lives and thrives at every dark corner.”

Please let me know what you think of it so far.

Sleep Time

February 20, 2009 at 7:48 am (General, Writing)

Time to go to sleep and take some time off from writing, life in the USA is always busy, which is by the way a word that did not existed in Brazil, when I first moved to the USA, I am sure now they have a Portuguese version of the word.

Time to visit the astral dreamland to recharge the inspiration fuel cells.
Good night guys.
